The talk will report on R&D studies of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) simplified mathematical models providing physical insight and efficient numerical solution. First, the Green function of an interfacial line current source derived analytically will be given, which can be used to calculate spatial-temporal radiation pattern of an arbitrary current pulse and to clean out the fringes in a real radar scan. Second, the generalization of the “exploding reflector” concept, widely used in seismic prospecting, will be discussed. Third, experiments with a prototype of holographic subsurface radar will be presented. With the available holographic antenna array and for a fixed wavelength, microwave image quality is rather poor. However, combining measurements done with different radiator positions provides quite satisfactory picture of a typical object.
